NEW ITEM *Monthly CO's Report*

(November 11, 2011)

A new monthly item from the CO highlighting the previous months squadrons successes:

October 2011

This month saw our fourth 16 year old cadet fly solo in the powered gliders of Abingdon 612 volunteer gliding school.  Congratulations to Cadet Woolliams who follows similar successes over the summer by Cadet Sergeant Naworynsky and Cadet Corporals Buchanan & Toner.  We wish our next candidate Cadet Corporal Lazenby well, as he begins his course in November.

Congratulations to Cadet Corporal Buchanan who has also been selected from candidates across Thames Valley Wing for the GAPAN gliding scholarship which will further develop his piloting skills.

4 of our cadets successfully completed their Gliding Induction Course on 2nd Oct and a further 3 cadets attended Air Experience Flying on 22nd Oct, so all in all we're doing quite well with our limited flying opportunities.

3 of our female cadets all represented Thames Valley Wing at sport and were selected to go on and represent the South West Region!  Congratulations to Cadet Pratley in swimming and Cadets Burrell and Sanderson in hockey!  This builds on our squadron successes in the wing swimming, athletics, football and in winning the Wing Sporting Squadron of the Year trophy!

12 cadets have been enrolled in the Public Services or Music BTEC, this is in addition to the Aviation Studies BTEC all cadets can achieve through completion of their ATC syllabus.

We had a number of senior leavers at the end of this summer; Cadet Sergeants Holloway and Dearlove both to University and Cadet Flight Sergeants MacDonald and Burrell to University and Defence Sixth Form respectively.  We wish them all well in their studies and future careers.

Congratulations on promotion to our new Corporals: Lazenby, George and Sanders. Also congratulations to newly promoted Sergeants Naworynsky, Lucas, Huckin and Kershaw.

As we move into the winter months we have now requested all cadets wear their hi-viz vests travelling to and from the squadron.  We suggest they all bring their jeltex jackets each evening even if not raining on leaving home as it could be very cold or wet by the time they depart.  We will obviously spend a lot more time inside now it is dark on arrival at parade nights and we encourage cadets and parents to recognise the focus will be more academic throughout this period although we will try and find opportunities to get out of the classroom when possible. We also face some challenges with our leaking main building but we hope these will soon be resolved!

I hope this report is useful and welcome feedback
